7 CHURCHES IN THE HEART OF CAGLIARI

The medieval district of Castello (Castle) is the oldest of the four historic districts of Cagliari. It is prominently located on a hill, about one hundred meters above sea, and is the heart of the city with its mighty walls that still surround most of the district perimeter.

Alone in Castello there are seven churches: 4 are in Gothic Aragonese style and 2 in Baroque style. However the most important is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was built by the Pisans in the thirteenth century and underwent profound stylistic changes over the centuries. In 1930, the facade was restored in an effort to give back to the church the original Pisan-Romanesque style. The church obtained cathedral status in 1258 and is now the seat of the archbishop of Cagliari.

The Cathedral is open daily from 8:00 – 12:00 and from 16:00 – 20:00. On request you can also visit the Cathedral Museum, where are held the most important works of the Cathedral Treasury.

SPECTACULAR BIRD LIFE IN SOUTH SARDINIA

The Parco Molentargius-Saline located between Cagliari and Quartu is one of the most important sites in Europe for the staging, wintering and breeding of numerous wading bird species. A common sight is the pink flamingo, which has been nesting here since 1993. Ponds are also home to the black-winged stilt, the common water hen, the marsh harrier and the Eurasian wigeon, as well as the extremely rare purple heron, great egret and cattle egret, the little egret, the mallard and several species of ducks.

Birdwatchers can admire spectacular views such as the flight of the pink flamingos at sunset or the mating dance of the black-winged stilt.

Join one of the guided tours to observe the park’s plant and animal life! The park includes an area of green parkland with fitness trails and other paths across a beautiful and precious wetland habitat. We recommend to discover the area in push-bike, which you can rent at the entrance, in the “Sali Scelti” building.

If you particularly love flamingos, come visit in May when you can observe an estimated 10,000 breeding pairs. What a show!

Opening hours:
– from 16 October to 28 February, from 07.00 to 18:00.
– From 1 March to 15 October, from 06.30 to 21.00

SO MANY IMPRESSIONS IN ONE PLACE

What to do on a grey winter day? My suggestion is to go to the amazing market of San Benedetto in the center of Cagliari. This experience is a feast for all senses! I never can get enough of the vibrant colors and wonderful smells of all the delicious food gracefully put on display.

For me this place is magic – I recommend it to anyone keen to learn about the Sardinian culture and its food. I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Ah, don’t forget! On the way out, buy some freshly fried calamaris. They are so yum!

The best time to visit this fantastic market is before 10:00 am, from Monday to Thursday. The market is located in Via Francesco Cocco Ortu and is open daily until 13.00. There are plenty of parking lots nearby. Enjoy!

VISIT MONTE CLARO CITY PARK

If you are spending the day in Cagliari, you might not want to miss a visit to the beautiful and well-kept city park of Monte Claro, which covers an area of 25 hectares. It is located on a hill between the districts of Is Mirrionis and Fonsarda and the municipality of Pirri.

The slopes of the hill Monte Claro have been repopulated with Mediterranean trees and shrubs, which alternate with sunny green meadows. Along the many paths suitable for walking and jogging, among the scents of flowers and aromas of the plants, it is easy to forget that you are just between the busiest thoroughfares of Cagliari, Via Cadello and Via Is Mirrionis.

This extensive and very pleasant area of the city not only represents an important green lung in a very populous and busy area, but is also a lovely meeting point, especially in the summer evenings and during the holidays.

The access to the park is free and the opening hours are from 6:00 am to midnight from May to October and from 7:00 to 21:00 from November to April.

GETTING ROUND AND ABOUT IN CAGLIARI? DON’T MISS THESE DELIGHTS!

No matter the weather, after a long walk in the city you will start looking for an interesting place to rest.

Recently I have discovered this beautiful little café just behind Via Roma … Dulcis Pasticceria in Via Baylle. And it is actually an amazing pastry shop! They are specialised in fresh Sardinian sweets, but also offer delicious cakes, mini sandwitches, different types of coffee, a large selection of Kusmi teas, wines and more.

The place is tiny with only a few tables, but they also have a take-away and catering service.

THE SANTAS ARE BACK!

Ten thousand steps of generosity for three Pink Points in Cagliari. This is the subtitle of the event that will take place this year in the beautiful beach front Poetto. The Santa Claus run is a solidarity race that aims to raise funds for the creation of three Pink Points for lactation of children in three city structures of the Health Protection Sardinia.

The sporting event is a non-competitive race, open to all without age limits. The participants will run along a path of about ten thousand steps, starting from the first stop at the Poetto. The turning point of the race is located at the Hippodrome, while the arrival will be located at the Lido of Cagliari beach club.
