INTENSE MOMENTS OF DEVOTION, FAITH, CULTURE AND TRADITIONS

sant'efisio 2

Each year, from 1st to 4 May, experience the stunning festivity dedicated to Saint Efisio, one of the most important religious and folk events of whole Sardinia! Perpetuated for three and a half centuries this popular pilgrimage is to honor the vow made by the Administration of Cagliari in 1656 to thank the saint for having freed the city from a violent plague.

During the four days the saint is carried on foot and followed by the faithful for more than 60 km from the church of Stampace in Cagliari to the tiny church of Nora and back. The most exciting moments are the spectacular parade in Cagliari on 1st May showcasing the colorful folk costumes from all over Sardinia, the passage of the saint in Pula and his arrival in Nora.

DO YOU LOVE FISH AND SEAFOOD?

There are several good fish & seafood restaurants around Chia, South Sardinia, where you can taste fresh delicacies of the sea! For example, try a selection of seafood antipasti such as the pulpo with vegetables, the tuna salad with olives and tomato or the mixed seafood antipasto! To complete your meal you must try the wonderful redfish Catalan style with onions and tomatoes. All this accompanied by a fresh Vermentino wine….Mmmhhh… So delicious!

Our favorite fish & seafood restaurants are the rustic Trattoria da Angelo in Domus de Maria, and in Chia the amazing and lively Ristorante Mirage, the wonderful Ristorante Bithia and the chic Ristorante Crar’è Luna. Make your choice and enjoy!

A GREAT PLACE TO TRY THE GRILLED PIGLET SARDINIAN STYLE

If you are staying in the Chia area, you probably haven’t missed the sign of the Ristorante Bithia, just on the main road to the beaches. Well if you have asked yourself whether you should give them a try, our answer is you should!

This pretty restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and welcomes families with children as well as small groups. Depending on the weather you can eat either in the lovely garden or in the large patio. For cooler days, they also have a few tables inside.

Now let’s talks about their specialties: here is the place where you should try Fregola (a coarse type of couscous) with seafood, fish and meet (e.g. beef ribs) on the grill. On the menu you will also find cutlets, salad dishes and hamburgers. During the summer you can savor the delicious grilled Maialetto Sardo (piglet) which will be served every Tuesday – book in advance! In any case, don’t leave before having tried their delicious desserts, for example the Sfogliata Chantilly (layers of puff pastry with whipped cream and seasonal fruits) and their homemade Sebada (traditional Sardinian fried pastry filled with fresh cheese and honey). Yummmm!

If you have any doubts, just ask the lovely waitress Frederica, which is always friendly and helpful in describing the dishes, even in English.
For bookings contact Ristorante Bithia, Viale Chia 6, 09010 Domus de Maria, Phone +39 0709230069. They also speak English!

SOUTH SARDINIA BEACHES – SA COLONIA CHIA

Sa Colonia beach is characterized by a large stretch of white-amber sand, bathed by the emerald and crystalline water and shallow shore, which are so typical of this area. On the left side of the beach you will see the Tower of Chia, while on the left rises the Monte Cogoni. Behind the beach are the beautiful dunes and the lagoon of Chia.

How to get there: From the main road of Chia, follow the signs for Torre Chia, take the last road on the right, go straight to the end until you find the parking. Alternatively, instead of turning to Torre Chia, turn right into the next street (Via del Levante), which runs alongside the lagoon, until you get to the parking. From there continue on foot to the beach.

Services (in the summer): bar, toilets, sunbeds and umbrellas rental, parking, canoe, pedalo, jet ski, excursions, diving, snorkeling and sailing.

Our tips: out of season, free parking and less crowded; avoid in case of Mistral; no seagrass.

MONTE COGONI – NATURE AND BEAUTY AT YOUR FEET

The Monte Cogoni beach is located in Chia in the municipality of Domus de Maria. It is next to the beach of Sa Colonia, which can also be accessed on foot following a path around the the tower of Chia (watch video).

The beach of Sa Colonia, in turn, joins the beach of Su Portu and is characterized by the presence of Cardolinu, an islet attached to the beach by a narrow isthmus of sand. The Monte Cogoni beach has a light-colored sand, low dunes and is interesting because of the Chia lagoon, where you will see egrets, coots, herons and the beautiful pink flamingos.

Its shallow water makes it safe for children to play. This beach is ideal for snorkeling or scuba diving and by windy conditions, it is an ideal spot for surfers.

You can get there by following the signs to Torre di Chia or Spiaggia Sa Colonia. it is accessible to the disabled and offers camping, bar and restaurant.

SOUTH SARDINIA BEACHES – CALA MARINA

This post starts a series about the beaches of South Sardinia, near and around Pula, Chia and Teulada. Today we start with the beach of Cala Marina (also called Cala Bernardini).

If you are staying in one of our rental properties in Eden Rock, the beach is never too far away (600 – 1500 m) and can be reached on foot. The family-friendly beach of Cala Bernardini forms, with the beach of Riva dei Pini, a single beach of fine white sand, clear emerald waters, sandy and shallow bottom for several tens of meters from the shore. A few rocks can be found in the water and on the beach, but there is practically no seaweed.

Following the trail on the right towards the pink granite rocks, you will discover other small coves of fine sand and further the beach of Pinus Village. Behind lies a dense Mediterranean vegetation which perfumes the air.

How to get there: Take either the junction to Cala Marina (just across the Capo Blu village) or to the village Riva dei Pini, then head towards the sea. You can also reach the Pinus Village beach by crossing the village.

Services (in the summer): bar, toilets, sunbed and umbrella rental, parking

Our tip: If you prefer to take the car, make sure to arrive before 10 am, especially in July and August. In the summer you can park for a fee, out of season it’s mostly free of charge. Avoid driving through Pinus Village in July/August.

DON’T EAT ME PLEASE!

The Mangiabarche lighthouse (named Boat Eater) is one of the most evocative beacon of South Sardinia. Despite its name, its purpose is of course to keep boats from crashing on the dangerous rocks which are hiding just underneath the surface.

In front of the lighthouse and behind the cliffs overhanging the sea, you will find an enchanting beach, where the sea is incredibly transparent and the sun reflecting on the seabed creates thousands shimmering shades of blue.

This lovely spot is on the island of Sant’Antioco, which can easily be reached from the Sardinian South coast by crossing the bridge. To get there follow the coastal road and shortly before reaching the beaches of Calasetta, turn at the sign and follow the unpaved road.

The beach has a small parking, hotels, bars, refreshment and is particularly loved by scuba divers and snorkelers. So don’t forget to bring all your gear to admire the rich seabed of this area!
