GIROTONNO – CELEBRATING THE SEA RIDERS

Girotonno 2019 – Celebrating the rider of the sea

Discover tuna tradition and culture in a corner of paradise, the Sulcis Iglesiente, in Carloforte, Sardinia! From 30 May to 2 June 2019 the Girotonno will take place: four days of culture, arts, food, wine, music and entertainment.

For example there will be a Tuna Cuisine Competition with chefs from six nations, who will prepare stunning tuna dishes, or the Girotonno Live Cooking event in which national and international chefs prepare food live, comment and invite the public to taste their original tuna-based creations.

Carloforte in San Pietro Island possesses the last tuna trap in Italy. Every year from April to mid-June the passage of the Bluefin tuna is intercepted in the west of the island, where fishing is always fruitful, full of emotions and history. Despite its fascination, it has to be said that this fishing tradition has become controversial and raises lots of questions about the ecological sustainability, given the lack of tuna in the world…

AN UNFORGETTABLE KAYAK TOUR

An unforgettable kayak tour that leads us to explore the beautiful south coast of Sardinia.

The tour starts at Tuerredda, a paradisiac beach located between Capo Capo Spartivento and Malfatano. With its fine white sandy beach and the emerald colour of the sea, it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia. After a quick tour of the island just in front of, we leave Tuerredda behind us to continue along the coast towards Cape Malfatano. This coast is marked by Spanish towers that have played an important role in protecting the island.
Our trip continues among the many coves and the wild coast. We finally arrive in Cape Malfatano where we can admire his tower and stop to have a little rest. We still continue for a few kilometres until you reach the tower Piscinni.

FIG FESTIVAL IN DOMUS DE MARIA – 25/26 JUNE 2016

The countryside around Domus de Maria is very rich in fig trees, especially in the hamlet of Chia. These trees define the landscape and the fruit is appreciated and consumed since ancient times. To promote the history of the fig tree and the local community, which has always cultivated it with love and commitment, the town dedicates two days to the food, economic and ancestral relationship between the locals and the production of the fig.

On Saturday 25 June you will have the opportunity to taste and buy figs in Piazza degli Scolopi in Chia (the right road after the bar L’Incontro) and in the evening celebrations will continue with music, songs and dances performed by local folk groups.

On Sunday 26 June local farmers will expose their produce on Viale Chia and Viale del Porto, thereby opening their doors to the visitors. From 11:00 am – 9:00 pm don’t miss the chance to visit for free the Tower of Chia, which will be open on this occasion.
