RARE FORMATIONS IN THE CAVE IS ZUDDAS

While in South Sardinia don’t miss a visit to the impressive karst cave of Is Zuddas! It is a true temple of nature where time has created a fairy-tale world. Along the 500 m long route you will discover beautiful and sometimes massive concretions such as stalactites, stalagmites, lava and cannulas. However, the main feature of the cave are the rare and eccentric aragonites, made of very white filaments spreading in all directions, defying the law of gravity.

The cave Is Zuddas is located in the south-west of Sardinia near the village of Santadi. It provides a splendid backdrop created by the incessant action of underground water.

Opening hours: http://www.grotteiszuddas.com/index.php/orari-grotta.html
Address: Località Is Zuddas, Santadi Carbonia -Iglesias 09010 Sardegna – Italia

CALA LUNA – A MAGICAL MUST-SEE ON THE EASTERN COAST

The spectacular Cala Luna beach is a long stretch of fine white sand featuring several stunning caves as well as a transparent and shallow blue sea. It is located north of Arbatax and south of the Gulf of Orosei, a short distance from Cala Gonone, where you will find the mind-blowing caves of Bue Marino.

The beach is easily accessible by boat from Cala Gonone. Adventurous travelers can hike along the road of Golgo (near Baunei) and then take the downhill path to the sea. The reward: sensational views!

This is also a great excursion if you travel to the South and your check-in is late in the afternoon, or if you have a few hours to spend before embarking on the ferry in the North of the island.

7 CHURCHES IN THE HEART OF CAGLIARI

The medieval district of Castello (Castle) is the oldest of the four historic districts of Cagliari. It is prominently located on a hill, about one hundred meters above sea, and is the heart of the city with its mighty walls that still surround most of the district perimeter.

Alone in Castello there are seven churches: 4 are in Gothic Aragonese style and 2 in Baroque style. However the most important is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was built by the Pisans in the thirteenth century and underwent profound stylistic changes over the centuries. In 1930, the facade was restored in an effort to give back to the church the original Pisan-Romanesque style. The church obtained cathedral status in 1258 and is now the seat of the archbishop of Cagliari.

The Cathedral is open daily from 8:00 – 12:00 and from 16:00 – 20:00. On request you can also visit the Cathedral Museum, where are held the most important works of the Cathedral Treasury.

SPECTACULAR BIRD LIFE IN SOUTH SARDINIA

The Parco Molentargius-Saline located between Cagliari and Quartu is one of the most important sites in Europe for the staging, wintering and breeding of numerous wading bird species. A common sight is the pink flamingo, which has been nesting here since 1993. Ponds are also home to the black-winged stilt, the common water hen, the marsh harrier and the Eurasian wigeon, as well as the extremely rare purple heron, great egret and cattle egret, the little egret, the mallard and several species of ducks.

Birdwatchers can admire spectacular views such as the flight of the pink flamingos at sunset or the mating dance of the black-winged stilt.

Join one of the guided tours to observe the park’s plant and animal life! The park includes an area of green parkland with fitness trails and other paths across a beautiful and precious wetland habitat. We recommend to discover the area in push-bike, which you can rent at the entrance, in the “Sali Scelti” building.

If you particularly love flamingos, come visit in May when you can observe an estimated 10,000 breeding pairs. What a show!

Opening hours:
– from 16 October to 31 March, from 07.00 to 18:00.
– From 1 April to 16 October, from 06.30 to 21.00

DEERS, EAGLES, MUFFLONS AND WILD BOARS

It is no longer a secret that the beaches of Sardinia are among the very best of the Mediterranean. However, not everybody knows that South Sardinia also has the largest holm oaks forest of Europe. If you are looking for an amazing excursion with family and friends, take a break from the beach and go discover the natural beauty of Is Cannoneris Wildlife Reserve !

In this magic place you may meet up with deers, eagles, mufflons, wild boars, which are the most important species that inhabit the park.

Join Sardeo’s jeep excursion, which also includes the visit at the prehistoric ruins of Nuraghi, ancient stone buildings, huge examples of “drystone” technique, dated from 1500 b.c. This interesting tour ends with a typical Sardinian snack (that in Sardinian language is called “Sa Picchettada”), offered by the guides.

BYSSUS – GOLDEN SILK FROM THE SEA

If you wander around in Sant’Antioco (San Pietro Island), in South Sardinia, why not pay a visit to the Byssus Museum?

Oh! Never heard about byssus? They are groups of strong and silky filaments, in this case, secreted by the Pinna nobilis, a saltwater clam that lives attach to the seabed. The “Sea Silk” has a long history and is even mentioned in the Bible. It was used to create and decorate gorgeous fabrics by spinning and weaving byssus.

Chiara Vigo is the only sea silk weaver master in Europe. She continues to weave byssus into all sorts of fabrics and clothing items and you can find her at the museum, where she holds workshops to demonstrate the magic of this ancient craft.

A SUNDAY LUNCH WITH A VIEW ON THE GULF OF CAGLIARI

Even if it’s hard to believe for some, today the weather forecast of South Sardinia announces 20 degrees warm and sunny. If you are in the area, we strongly recommend a stroll in the touristic harbor of Marina Piccola.

It is located just outside the city – at the beginning of the Poetto beach – and at the foot of the promontory Sella del Diavolo, one of the most famous symbols of the island capital.

The marina can accommodate up to 350 fishing and leisure boats and beside the many fish restaurants, there is also a lovely promenade with a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Cagliari. Marina Piccola is the most coveted harbor in the area due to its proximity to the beach and its large parking .
