DON’T EAT ME PLEASE!

The Mangiabarche lighthouse (named Boat Eater) is one of the most evocative beacon of South Sardinia. Despite its name, its purpose is of course to keep boats from crashing on the dangerous rocks which are hiding just underneath the surface.

In front of the lighthouse and behind the cliffs overhanging the sea, you will find an enchanting beach, where the sea is incredibly transparent and the sun reflecting on the seabed creates thousands shimmering shades of blue.

This lovely spot is on the island of Sant’Antioco, which can easily be reached from the Sardinian South coast by crossing the bridge. To get there follow the coastal road and shortly before reaching the beaches of Calasetta, turn at the sign and follow the unpaved road.

The beach has a small parking, hotels, bars, refreshment and is particularly loved by scuba divers and snorkelers. So don’t forget to bring all your gear to admire the rich seabed of this area!

7 CHURCHES IN THE HEART OF CAGLIARI

The medieval district of Castello (Castle) is the oldest of the four historic districts of Cagliari. It is prominently located on a hill, about one hundred meters above sea, and is the heart of the city with its mighty walls that still surround most of the district perimeter.

Alone in Castello there are seven churches: 4 are in Gothic Aragonese style and 2 in Baroque style. However the most important is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was built by the Pisans in the thirteenth century and underwent profound stylistic changes over the centuries. In 1930, the facade was restored in an effort to give back to the church the original Pisan-Romanesque style. The church obtained cathedral status in 1258 and is now the seat of the archbishop of Cagliari.

The Cathedral is open daily from 8:00 – 12:00 and from 16:00 – 20:00. On request you can also visit the Cathedral Museum, where are held the most important works of the Cathedral Treasury.

DEERS, EAGLES, MUFFLONS AND WILD BOARS

It is not a secret that the beaches of Sardinia are among the very best of the Mediterranean. However, not everybody knows that South Sardinia also has the largest holm oaks forest of Europe. If you are looking for an amazing excursion with family and friends, take a break from the beach and go discover the natural beauty of Is Cannoneris Wildlife Reserve !

In this magic place you may meet up with deers, eagles, mufflons, wild boars, which are the most important species that inhabit the park.

Book for example a jeep excursion with Sardeo, that also includes the visit at the prehistoric ruins of Nuraghi, ancient stone buildings, huge examples of “drystone” technique, dated from 1500 b.c. This interesting tour ends with a typical Sardinian snack (that in Sardinian language is called “Sa Picchettada”), offered by the guides.

SPECTACULAR BIRD LIFE IN SOUTH SARDINIA

The Parco Molentargius-Saline located between Cagliari and Quartu is one of the most important sites in Europe for the staging, wintering and breeding of numerous wading bird species. A common sight is the pink flamingo, which has been nesting here since 1993. Ponds are also home to the black-winged stilt, the common water hen, the marsh harrier and the Eurasian wigeon, as well as the extremely rare purple heron, great egret and cattle egret, the little egret, the mallard and several species of ducks.

Birdwatchers can admire spectacular views such as the flight of the pink flamingos at sunset or the mating dance of the black-winged stilt.

Join one of the guided tours to observe the park’s plant and animal life! The park includes an area of green parkland with fitness trails and other paths across a beautiful and precious wetland habitat. We recommend to discover the area in push-bike, which you can rent at the entrance, in the “Sali Scelti” building.

If you particularly love flamingos, come visit in May when you can observe an estimated 10,000 breeding pairs. What a show!

Opening hours:
– from 16 October to 28 February, from 07.00 to 18:00.
– From 1 March to 15 October, from 06.30 to 21.00

VISIT BARUMINI AND ENJOY AUTHENTIC SARDINIAN FOOD

If you are staying in South Sardinia, we suggest a visit to Barumini, just a 1.5 hour drive from the Pula/Chia area. Barumini features one of the most important archaeological sites of the island (UNESCO heritage) where you can see the remains of the largest nuragic settlement dating from about 1600 BC! The entrance fee includes the visit to the museum and the cultural centre.

For lunch we strongly recommend the Hotel Restaurant Su Nuraxi, which is just a few hundred meters further from the historical site. They propose authentic Sardinian food, cooked with the heart and served with the soul. Make your choice from the menu or just ask the friendly owner Carla, who will be happy to suggest the dish of the day. They also have a great choice of appetizers (antipasti) including local cheese and ham, as well as homemade pickled vegetables.

VISIT MONTE CLARO CITY PARK

If you are spending the day in Cagliari, you might not want to miss a visit to the beautiful and well-kept city park of Monte Claro, which covers an area of 25 hectares. It is located on a hill between the districts of Is Mirrionis and Fonsarda and the municipality of Pirri.

The slopes of the hill Monte Claro have been repopulated with Mediterranean trees and shrubs, which alternate with sunny green meadows. Along the many paths suitable for walking and jogging, among the scents of flowers and aromas of the plants, it is easy to forget that you are just between the busiest thoroughfares of Cagliari, Via Cadello and Via Is Mirrionis.

This extensive and very pleasant area of the city not only represents an important green lung in a very populous and busy area, but is also a lovely meeting point, especially in the summer evenings and during the holidays.

The access to the park is free and the opening hours are from 6:00 am to midnight from May to October and from 7:00 to 21:00 from November to April.
